We began with a wide-open tuna bite, as the fish were just a few miles offshore. The dolphins and tuna have been corralling big schools of blue runners and feeding on them voraciously — an excellent opportunity for some great topwater action. The weapons of choice were Williamson, Yo-Zuri and Halco poppers along with live blue runners and goggle eyes. For popping rods, the Penn Carnage II 50/100 7′ spinning rods with a Spinfisher V 7500 reel and 80lb Berkley Pro Spec braid, were in play.

The tuna ran anywhere from thirty to two hundred pounds. The frenzy of tuna action did not go unnoticed by the big blue marlins, and several of them were caught trolling on the outside of the dolphin pods.

The second half of the month, while the tuna bite slowed, the sailfish moved in. We have been raising between four to seven sailfish per boat per day, with several double releases. There were even a couple of triple hookups.

On the inshore front, the roosterfish action continues to be very good, both in numbers and quality. The Matapalo area has been producing some very large roosterfish and cubera snapper. The beaches outside Carate have been holding a mix of jack and roosterfish.

I want to mention that we had the pleasure of hosting several winners from a sweepstake put on by Penn Europe. It was an international group with anglers from the UK, France, Germany, Denmark and Ireland.

An enthusiastic group of diverse anglers, many of whom had never fished in saltwater before. It was great fun to see the expressions on their faces as they returned to the pier from a day of fighting big tuna and wrestling colorful roosterfish.

In September we should see continuing action from both inshore and offshore fishing. And, as in every year, we will be updating our fleet with the new equipment we have received to tackle the challenges of Costa Rica sportfishing.
